Andrew Byala, Student Intern

Hello.  My name is Andrew (he/him), and I am an intern therapist currently pursuing my Master's in Mental Health and Wellness Counseling at NYU.

As an out gay man for many years, I am excited to be working at Flourish Therapy to support all members of the LGBTQ+ community. Life can be complicated and stressful, whether that means personally, professionally, politically, or in our families and relationships, and I would like to do my part in making this world a little more peaceful and pleasant for us all.

My approach to counseling is collaborative and client-centered, and I firmly believe that you are the expert of your experience. My goal in working with you is to understand your challenges and goals, build on your strengths, and search for and work through whatever is holding you back from living a happy and rewarding life. We will use whichever tools you find most helpful, whether that means cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), examining past traumas, acceptance work, or distress tolerance.

I grew up in Pennsylvania, and earned a B.A. in Psychology and B.S.E. in Computer Science & Engineering from the University of Pennsylvania. Since then, I have lived in Austin, TX. Prior to returning to grad school for my counseling degree, I worked in software development and architecture for 23 years. I have a crazy dachshund named Hilly, am an avid gamer, and relax by getting into nature or scuba diving when the opportunity presents itself.
