Jen Lindstrand, Student Intern
My counselor orientation is integrative in nature, combining narrative therapy, psychodynamic theory, and feminist theories, with somatic work and mindfulness where appropriate. In session, I pay close attention to the ways that the environment my clients are in may shape them, which may include themes of equity, social justice, gender expression and sexuality, and oppression. I use unconditional positive regard with all of my clients and my goal is to create a compassionate, welcoming, and safe space where you feel that you can be your most authentic self. If there is anywhere to be your most authentic self, I think that is in the therapy space where there is no judgment, just real human expression. I believe that you are the expert on your lived experience, and I will always honor that in session.
On a personal note, I recently moved to Salt Lake City from Washington D.C. I am originally from Madison, Wisconsin, but I have lived all over the country. I love to put myself in new environments, out of my comfort zone, as I believe this helps me to grow as a person. I am often saying “yes” to a new experience, just to see where it takes me. Some of my experience includes working in elementary schools, crisis counseling, teaching English abroad to children as a TEFL certified English teacher, coaching high school sports, working abroad in refugee camps with migrants and asylum seekers, instructing graduate level courses in universities, and working on various public policy initiatives that impact health and human rights.
As a person who stutters (PWS), I have had the honor of working as a mentor and coach for others who stutter for twenty years. I know what it feels like to be misunderstood by society or to feel as though your authentic self is locked inside of you, and I can relate to clients who may feel this way. I am always happy to work with people who stutter, as this is often something that heavily impacts us on a psychological and emotional level. I also have personal experience with adoption, trauma and identity conflicts related to adoption, domestic violence, substance use, disordered eating, and emotionally, physically, and psychologically abusive environments.
My education includes a masters in public policy and administration with a focus in global health from Northwestern University, a post bachelor's degree in marketing from UCLA, and a bachelor of science in psychology, social science, and business administration from UW-Stevens Point. Currently, I am completing my final two courses at New York University in a masters degree in Counseling for Mental Health and Wellness. I will soon be seeking licensure as a clinical mental health counselor and I plan to start a doctoral program in psychology in 2025.
In my spare time, you can usually find me listening to music, doing yoga in a sunny spot, running on a new trail, or learning a new skill. I enjoy writing, photography, running, snowboarding, yoga, rock climbing, and connecting with my community. Whether we meet in session, or we never have the opportunity to meet at all, I want you to know that you matter. Your lived experience matters and you deserve to live a full life where you feel that you can be your most authentic self. Thank you for stopping by and be well.
