Jen Lindstrand, ACMHC
Hi, my name is Jen, and I am an associate clinical mental health counselor licensed to work with clients who reside in Utah. I work on telehealth typically between 7am-4pm mountain time with gender expansive teens, young adults, and adults. My approach to therapy is rooted in the wellness model of psychotherapy meaning that I take a holistic, whole person approach with clients. As a therapist, I am most interested in trauma related work. I primarily work with PTSD and C-PTSD, abusive environments, boundaries and healthy relationships, Dissociative Identity Disorder, various personality disorders, dissociative disorders, co-occurring mental health disorders, and complex mental health disorders.
So, what is therapy with me like? I believe in centering my clients experience, as you are the expert on your lived experience. I am here as a guide to work with you towards your therapeutic goals. Therapy with me is collaborative, trauma-informed, holistic, and laidback. In session, I will encourage you to be exactly who you are, and to express yourself in a way that feels best for you. As an integrative therapist, rather than applying a one size fits all approach, I will work from therapeutic frameworks that I believe will help you to reach your therapeutic goals. Often, the frameworks I pull from include narrative therapy, psychodynamic theory, cognitive behavioral therapy, feminist theories, liberation psychology, positive psychology, mindfulness, and somatic work. I am not a “homework therapist”, however I will often ask you at the end of session what goals you want to work on for the week, or what you can do for yourself in the upcoming week until we meet again. It is important to me to create a compassionate, welcoming, and safe space where you feel that you can be your most authentic self. I believe that you are the expert on your lived experience, and I will always honor that in session.
On a personal note, I am originally from Madison, Wisconsin and have lived on both coasts and abroad. I grew up non-religious and now would consider myself to be spiritual, valuing nature and the interconnectedness of all things. I strongly value having as open of a mind as possible, remaining curious about what each experience has to offer. Over the past twenty years, my professional experience has included working as a crisis counselor and in various crisis environments, working on public policy and global health initiatives domestically and abroad, teaching English to non-native English speakers, and working in refugee camps with asylum seekers. I am passionate about work that helps people at both the individual and collective level.
As a person who stutters (PWS), I have had the honor of working as a mentor and coach for others who stutter for twenty years. I know what it feels like to be misunderstood by society or to feel as though your authentic self is locked inside of you, and I can relate to clients who may feel this way. I am always happy to work with people who stutter, as this is often something that heavily impacts us on a psychological and emotional level. I also have experience with adoption, trauma and identity conflicts related to adoption, substance use, disordered eating, and emotionally, physically, and psychologically abusive environments.
Educationally, I hold a masters in mental health counseling from New York University with honors, a masters in public policy and administration with a focus in global health from Northwestern University, a post bachelor's degree in marketing from UCLA, and a bachelor of science in psychology, social science, and business administration from UW-Stevens Point.
In my spare time, you can usually find me listening to music, doing yoga in a sunny spot, running on a new trail, or learning a new skill. I enjoy writing, photography, running, snowboarding, yoga, rock climbing, and connecting with my community. Whether we meet in session, or we never have the opportunity to meet at all, I want you to know that you matter. Your lived experience matters and you deserve to live a full life where you feel that you can be your most authentic self. If you are considering therapy with me but have questions, please feel free to email me at Jen.L@flourishtherapy.org. Fit between a client and therapist is so important and I will do my best to answer your questions as you figure out your best fit. Thank you for stopping by and be well.
