Heath Smith, Student Intern

Heath (He/Him) is an intern therapist with experience in helping individuals navigate life’s

challenges. His approach is client-centered, collaborative, and non-judgmental, creating a safe

space for exploring thoughts, feelings, and challenging life events.

As a member of the LGBTQIA2S+ community living in a conservative state, Heath understands firsthand the challenges faced navigating life in today’s politically charged world. His journey in Utah has shaped his understanding of the importance of affirming and inclusive communities and has fueled his passion for advocating for all individuals’ rights. These experiences have cemented his dedication to supporting the mental health needs of everyone, especially the LGBTQIA2S+ community.

Heath completed his Bachelor’s in Psychology in 2016. He then served as an AmeriCorps member and later as a staff member with the national nonprofit Playworks, leveraging the power of play to transform children’s physical and emotional health in elementary schools across Utah. During this time, he found a passion for working with children and adolescents, inspired by their unique ways of interacting with the world.

Following that, Heath became a leader as a Psychiatric Technician at Huntsman Mental Health Institute, where he has worked for the past two years. His commitment to mental health advocacy drives his educational journey as he begins his second year of his Master of Social Work program at the University of Utah. His therapeutic approach focuses on client-centered, psychodynamic, and humanistic theories with experience and passion for gender-affirming care, trauma-informed care, and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy.

In his free time, Heath loves being a funcle to his two niblings, going on mountain adventures with friends and family, and playing various musical instruments (clarinet being his favorite).
