Mahalia Lotz, Student Intern

Mahalia (they/she) is in their final year as a graduate student at the University of Utah. She also earned bachelor's degrees in Sociology and Gender Studies at the University of Utah in 2019.

For the past seven years, Mahalia has worked as an advocate for survivors of relationship, sexual, and family violence at various nonprofits and state organizations in the Salt Lake area. As an advocate, they learned how trauma impacts our brains and bodies and the value of healing in community.

Mahalia is passionate about expanding everyone’s access to information and resources, and she approaches the role of therapist as being a trauma-informed guide in a complicated and sometimes hostile mental health system. They have an eclectic (meaning she uses a variety of therapeutic modalities) approach to therapy, because different tools and systems work for different clients. They often draw on queer theory, disability theory, and decolonization practices. Mahalia centers each client’s strengths, identities, and choices. She prioritizes creating a safe therapeutic relationship, and knows the value of working with a therapist who is the right fit. Mahalia looks forward to exploring how they can support your healing journey and help you thrive.

Mahalia is queer, polyamorous, post-Mormon, and neurodivergent, and they love resting. She also enjoys fiber arts, disc golf, eating good food, home improvement projects, and connecting with the queer community.
